The George Walford International Essay Prize (offering £3,500 each year for the winner to spend at the college and on the course of the winner’s choice) has been online since the early 1990s.  Here are some memos and milestones made along the way.

  • November 2021: Beyond Politics by George Walford published in a new edition.
  • June 2021: From Village to Empire / 4X Games and Systematic Ideology by Alice Noel.
  • July 2019: Contact page updated to reflect the passing of John Rowan in May 2018.
  • September 2018: Significant donation of rare books by and owned by George Walford from Richenda Walford.

  • 5 November 2017: Angles on Anarchism by George Walford, out of print since 1991, now back in print with new introduction by Trevor Blake, comprehensive collection of reviews and criticism, new index, and new cover by Kevin I. Slaughter.
  • 5 June 2017: For 2018 only, a suggested and entirely optional theme is offered: Brexit through the lens of systematic ideology. There is no requirement for the applicant or the entry to be in favor of or against systematic ideology. There is no requirement for the applicant or the entry to be in favor of or against Brexit. Does the theory predict Brexit, or does Brexit propose a challenge to the theory? Does the theory predict a likely outcome of Brexit, or does it not? What roles did each of the Major Ideologies play in Brexit? Is Brexit a return to the system of ideologies from an unbalanced state, or is Brexit a disruption of the system of ideologies, or neither?
  • 5 June 2017: No qualifying entries for the George Walford International Essay Prize
  • 8 July 2016: Reconceptualising (systematic) Ideology in the Wake of Political Psychology by Joshua Feldman.  Winner, 2016 George Walford International Essay Prize.
  • 11 January 2016: Hundreds of items listed from early 1940s including letters and the formative documents of the Absolutists.  This is the 75th year since the earliest publication of systematic ideology and the 21st year for gwiep.net.
  • November 2015: gwiep.net migrates back to the UK after being hosted in the USA since the early 1990s.
  • August 2014:
    • The World Wide Web was invented in 1992, gwiep.net went online in 1995.
    • gwiep.net word count: more than one million, two hundred and thirty-six thousand words.
    • More than twenty books and the complete contents of Ideological Commentary magazine (1979 – 1994).
    • Approximately 70,000 lines of code.
    • More than one thousand, one hundred files (text, images, etc.).
    • Fourteen years of the Prize, awarding a total of £34,000 to the winners.

  • 23 August 2014: A significant milestone has been reached today, to be announced.
  • 11 August 2013: Ideological Commentary through issue 48 now online.   Approximately 1,144,000 words, or 2,500 single-space 12-point printed pages.
  • June 2013: The Systematic Supernatural / Systematic Ideology as a Framework for the Origin, Function, and Alteration of Religion by Mary Cole. Winner, 2013 George Walford International Essay Prize.
  • 17 May 2013: Ideological Commentary through issue 44 now online.  More than 800 pages.
  • 11 September 2012: Disaster – relief!  The site crash of April/May 2012 is undone.  Applicants for the Prize should note it takes at least five months to read every page at the site. Not every page need be read to apply for and win the Prize, but this time frame can be useful in scheduling research.
  • 5 September 2012: Link by link and page by page editing of site continues.
  • 2 June 2012: Added Theory of Systematic Ideology and Its Interaction with Social Media in Historical Perspective by Katharine Frederick, winner of the 2012 George Walford International Essay Prize.  Link by link and page by page editing of site continues.
  • 18 May 2012: 1,049 internal links restored on 180 pages.  Hundreds of pages and thousands of links remaining to be restored.
  • 14 May 2012: Site more or less online again, restoration of internal links 1/5th complete.
  • April – May 2012: Disaster!  Site compromised.  Restoration begins.  Deadline for Prize postponed two weeks.

  • 26 June 2009: Chiropracting Systematic Ideology by Will Penman, USA is awarded the 2009 George Walford International Essay Prize.
  • 17 February 2009: Our labors from October 2007 until February 2009 have born fruit. The Domain of Ideologies is now online in PDF form with a new introduction, a new bibliography and a new index. After a short period of field testing (please download the book and tell us if you spot any errors) the book will be in print again for the first time in over sixty years.
  • 31 January 2009: Seventeen years of GWIEP, thirty-three years of systematic ideology, sixty-seven years of Harold Walsby’s theory. Continued work on essay with the working title ‘The Domain of Ideologies in One Thousand Words.’ Small revisions and additions to The Domain of Ideologies in preparation for publishing it in book form.
  • 19 December 20008: The new e-mail address for the George Walford International Essay Prize can be found on our contact page. Several new articles from issue 54 of Ideological Commentary added.
  • 23 September 2008: gwiep.net gets more than 11,000 spam e-mail messages every week. That is nearly one every second, every hour, every day, every week, every month, year after year. We are considering changing e-mail addresses later this year. and will let you know if and when we do.   • 13 April 2008: Some elements of this site went online in 1995, and have changed little since then. Some pages at this site had dates at the bottom of the page indicating when it went online and when it was last changed. We have always been proud that this site went online relatively early in the history of the World Wide Web. Unfortunately, some readers have encountered a page created over ten years ago and thought that the site as a whole had not been updated in ten years. All the dates on the individual pages have been removed. This timeline will continue to be updated.

  • 7 July 2005: George Walford, Ideology, Marxism and the SPGB by David McDonagh added.
  • 29 May 2005: Approximately 171,570 visitors since December 2003, with an average of 315 each day.
  • 31 March 2005: After many months effort, editing for spelling, links and content of each and every page of GWIEP completed.
  • 22 March 2005: New page for Fire Over Europe (1 October 1942), one of the very few events related to systematic ideology.
  • 9 January 2005: Spelling and format corrections throughout the site continue. Ten year anniversary of systematic ideology online.
  • 5 December 2004: Two reviews for Beyond Politics added, one by George Hay (1990) and one by Michael Stuart-Fox (1993). The organization of papers begun in September was largely completed in November, to the great benefit of our bibliographical listings.
  • 15 October 2004: A shamefully large number of spelling corrections made throughout the site. All books updated. All GWIEP.net PDF books offline until 2005, to make sure we are offering the most professional and useful publications possible.
  • 11 October 2004: Added The Ideology of a Monument (George Walford, 1976) and New Crusade of Democracy (1942).
  • 10 October 2004: Approximately 77,621 visitors since December 2003, with an average of 248 each day. Popular sections remain Part Two Chapter Two of Harold Walsby’s Domain of Ideologies, The Gods of Buddhism by George Walford and The Crowd by Gustav LeBon. Over one thousand four hundred copies of George Walford’s books Beyond Politics and Angles on Anarchism have been downloaded.
  • 8 October 2004: The majority of the bibliographical work is done. Only the undated and uncredited works remain to identify and sort. Minor changes throughout the site to accomodate this influx of new information.
  • 21 September 2004: Added review of The Domain of Ideologies from Universum.
  • 20 September 2004: Reorganization done, new bibliographies begun. Scan of New Crusade for Democracy added; photograph of the archives of the George Walford Internation Essay Prize, circa 20 September 1994 added.
  • 17 September 2004: Reorganization of the GWIEP archives nearly completed. A top to bottom revision of the bibliographies begun. A goal is set of having this project done by January 2005 – the 65th anniversary of systematic ideology.
  • 16 September 2004: Previously the GWIEP archives were sorted by source: the run of Ideological Commentary I got from George Walford were here, a spare set of IC was there, the papers of the SSA were somewhere else, a few books were in another room, and so on. As of this month all of it is going into a single collection, arranged chronologically. This project is perhaps half done.
  • 28 August 2004: Added A Digest of Hegel’s Philosophy, as reprinted by the SSA from Edward Caird’s Hegel (1883).
  • 27 August 2004: Small changes and updated here and there. Approximately 63,046 visitors since December 2003, with an average of 234 each day.

  • 14 March 2004: the old Web site was visited approximately 13,941 times total. The current site has been honored by 23,036 visitors since December 2003.
  • 20 January 2004: Bibliographical updates via the remarkable ‘search inside a book’ service from amazon.com.
  • 17 January 2004: Added a library of public domain works.
  • 10 January 2004: Entire site reformatted to be more uniform; added some entries to the Topics page.
  • 1 January 2004: Added From Religion to Anarchism, formatting changes to all the books, added some entries to the Topics page.
  • 28 December 2003: Added a simple search function to the site. Approximately 5,436 visitors in our first month, averaging 207 each day. 93 people clicked on New Readers Start Here, 49 downloaded Beyond Politics, 65 read A Challenge to the Socialist Party of Great Britain, 54 looked at the George Walford International Essay Prize.
  • 21 December 2003: Added Mugwump and Moonshine (SSA, circa 1949), Harold Walsby: Independant Thinker by Peter Shephard (circa 1976), and Understanding the Mass Mind (SSA, 1945).
  • 12 December 2003: Added Science and Social Problems. (SSA, circa 1944)
  • 11 December 2003: Added Harold Walsby (1911-1973) A Brief Intellectual Biography by P. J. Rollings. Added several graphics, links, made general corrections here and there.
  • 7 December 2003: Joined the e-mail list for the World Socialist Movement, posted a notice about George Walford’s book A Challenge to the Socialist Party of Great Britain.

  • 24 January 2003: Added Privacy Statement. Much work off-line in preparation for moving the entire site to another, final location. Approximately 6,790 visitors since March 2002.
  • 25 October 2002: Added biographical information about John Rowan as well as his Open Letter to Walsbians Everywhere.
  • 16 September 2002: Added John Pizer to biography page.
  • 4 June 2002: Small updates to links and biography pages.
  • 14 May 2002: Small updates to George Walford International Essay Prize page and Glossary page.
  • 19 March 2002: Added a (graphic only) site meter, with a beginning countof 5,000 visitors.
  • 8 July 2001: Graphics loaded in November 2001 finally linked into site in the first and second bibliographies. Increased use of HTML anchor names to allow for more exact links to GWIEP.NET. For the first time in the nine years of GWIEP.NET’s existence, an HTML editor is used instead of manually writing the code.
  • 26 November 2000: Over four megabytes of graphics are uploaded for eventual links from our graphics page. Several small HTML errors corrected throughout the site.
  • 18 November 2000: For two years we had a hit counter on the front page of GWIEP.NET. Our host, geocities.com, apparently changed how the counter worked and it no longer functions. Based on what we know the count was when it last functioned and statistics gathered since, we expect to exceed 5,000 hits to our home page over the between 1998 and January 2001.
  • 14 October 2000: Bibliography updated to include The Socialist Party of Great Britain by David A. Perrin, which contains references to the SSA, the Walsby Society, systematic ideology and publications and individuals associated with them. Approximately 4,142 hits to home page.
  • 2 October 2000: Front end to Beyond Politics added. Appropriate changes to corresponding page.
  • 1 October 2000: Complete text of Beyond Politics added. Initial scanning of art and book covers from historic documents relating to systematic ideology. In August, Janet Reilly and Richenda Walford met in London. Ms. Reilly’s winning essay now online here. Approximately 4,124 hits to home page.
  • 10 June 2000: The 1999-2000 winner of the George Walford International Essay Prize has been awarded to Janet Reilly. More details will follow.
  • 9 June 2000: Minor re-coding of the entire GWIEP.NET Web site. Approximately 3,757 hits to home page.
  • April 2000: Trevor Blake visits the International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam to review their holdings for Harold Walsby and George Walford. Slight restructuring of GWIEP.NET navigation on several pages. Approximately 3,329 hits to home page.
