George Walford: Freedom (47)

Access to land has long been one of the more important freedoms, and libertarians will be glad to know that the “More Land for Homes Campaign 1990” (a consortium of building societies, builders and builders’ merchants) is demanding that the authorities release more land for building. The Campaign estimates that up to two million more homes will be needed by the year 2001. (Hampstead Advertiser, 14 June 90)

The Thatcher government is again restricting freedom, this time freedom of the press. The Press Council has not succeeded either in restraining newspaper intrusions into privacy or in ensuring that corrections and apologies are given adequate prominence, and the government is threatening to impose controls if the press does not succeed in regulating itself.
