The following is a list of letters held in the collection of the George Walford International Essay Prize. Few, if any, of these letters have been published at any time. These letters are not necessarily the most important; they are instead the letters that we have. If you have letters not listed here, please contact us so that we may compensate you for copies of them. Most of these letters were either sent to or from individuals associated with Ideological Commentary from approximately 1979 to 1995.
What an effect a single letter can have on its reader. In his letter to me of 18 February 1994, George Walford wrote: "[..] I have to say one or two things about the content [of my contribution to the book Anarchy and the End of History]. You ask one of the crucial questions: 'if anarchy is so great, how come we're not all anarchists?' You ask it, but you don't answer it, sliding off into discussing whether individuals can live as anarchists - also important, and certainly connected, but not the same question. Your omission is not surprising, for that question cannot be answered within the orthodox anarchism which your article accepts." These three sentences initiated both the process of a top to bottom reconsideration of my political beliefs and the creation of this Web site. Both are, pleasantly, ongoing echoes of a bell struck long ago. - Trevor Blake

1996 and Beyond...
Good old-fashioned letters produced by pen and paper continue to
be exchanged among those interested in systematic ideology. But 1995 seems an
appropriate year to end this public record of such letters for two reasons.
First, from 1995 onward, the conversation has largely (but not entirely) taken
place on the Internet. See our links and contact
pages for where to join in. Second, while letters ten (or more) years old from
individuals who may no longer be with us may reasonably be considered historic,
more recent letters are considered private conversations.
