It is said you can know a person by who they do (and do not) associate themselves with. Systematic ideology is descriptive rather than prescriptive - that is, it is good for explaining the relationship between things but not much good for saying how things 'should' be or 'should not' be. Nonetheless, here are some of the individuals and organizations that have had an impact on systematic ideology. Some are supporters and students, some are negative influences and critics.

Trevor Blake thought by transcribing a few essays onto computer and
putting them on a BBS he could learn about two things at once: a political theory
and electronic publishing. That was in 1992. The theory was systematic ideology
and online publishing turned out to be on the World Wide Web instead of BBS.
You can view a small amount of Trevor's work and interests unrelated to systematic
ideology at the following address.

Braziers Park "is a community, a residential college and an architectural
treasure hidden deep in the south Oxfordshire countryside. It was founded in
1950 as an educational trust, and is a continuing experiment in the advantages
and problems of living in a group. Community members share responsibility for
running the college and the estate." Harold Walsby lived and taught at
Braziers, and the memorial lectures held in his name occurred there.

The Charity Commission for England and Wales describes itself in this
way: "The Charity Commission for England and Wales is established by law
as the regulator and registrar for charities in England and Wales. Our aim is
to provide the best possible regulation of charities in England and Wales in
order to increase charities' effectiveness and public confidence and trust."
This is the organization that recognizes the George Walford International Essay
Prize as a charitable group (number 1071002, to be exact).

The International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam houses the
papers of Harold Walsby and George Walford. The papers are in good company:
the only existing pages from the manuscript for the Communist Manifesto
are also housed here.

John Rowan lived and worked with Harold Walsby in 1950, and in 1951
joined the SPGB at Harold's suggestion in order to learn the rudiments of Marxism.
He became the editor of the SPGB's internal journal, Forum, and became
part of a group which included Frank Evans and Stan Parker; they were all expelled
eventually for dissident views. John went on to develop Walsby's theory (see
entry on this Web site) and now believes that Walsby's
approach is best pursued through joining in with the ideas of Ken Wilber.

The South Place Ethical Society describes itself in this way: "Based
at Conway Hall, London, the South Place Ethical Society is, we think, the oldest
freethought community in the world. It was founded in 1793 as a dissenting congregation
and for more than two centuries has been a focus for serious discussion of basic
ethical principles. By 1888 SPES had rejected the existence of God and become
an Ethical Society, the only one which now survives in the UK. It is now an
educational charity and maintains a proud tradition of free enquiry in all areas
of thought and action. It arranges many talks, courses and seminars for members
and interested non-members as well as the famous seasons of Sunday chamber music
concerts." Students of systematic ideology have participated in meetings
and debates at Conway Hall for decades, and continue to do so to this day. Their
newsletter The Ethical Record includes writing by and about George Walford.

Eric Stockton was born in London, December 1924. He participated in
the Manhattan Project, and (much later!) contributed to Ideological
Commentary and the George Walford Memorial.

Richenda Walford is a daughter of George Walford. She is co-creator
of the Web site Brussels Remembers. "We started collecting data
about memorials when in London because we enjoyed walking and cycling around
the city, finding out about its history, geography and architecture. We plotted
them on maps because we find maps endlessly fascinating and enjoy using them.
When we moved to Brussels it seemed that collecting memorials would be a splendid
way to investigate this city and so it has proved." She also co-created
London Remembers.

antagonistic. But each has had an influence on the theory and each can be viewed

Anarchy ('A Journal of Desire Armed') hosted an exchange
between editor Lev Chernyi and George Walford in 1992. Do these anarchists fit
the description of anarchists presented by systematic ideology (see Angles
on Anarchism)? What do these (or any) anarchists hope to achieve, by
what means, and how much progress have they made?

The Marxist Internet Archive is a marvel to behold. Over 300 authors
and surely the majority of every major and minor text by and about Marx, Engles
and all that follow from them. It is difficult to imagine a more comprehensive
and useful collection of Marxist writing. If you want to make reference to the
epidynamic ideologies (those advocating either Reform , Revolution or Repudiation),
you'll end up reading and quoting Marx sooner or later.

Oswald Mosley and his British Union of Fascists were a vital concern
to the early students of systematic ideology - they viewed fascism in Britain
as a real and negative possibility, and some of their work was designed as a
direct response to the BUF. In particular, read the extended writing about fascism
in The Domain of Ideologies by Harold
Walsby. The 'Friends of Oswald Mosley' have created a Web page about Mosley's
life and work. As you read their literature, think of why fascism was first
considered an ideology of Expediency but later considered an ideology of Domination
(see Meet Systematic Ideology for an explanation of
these terms). How did systematic ideology transition between a prescriptive
school of thought (against fascism) to a descriptive school of thought (explaining
fascism)? And how does one resolve the contradiction of both (1) describing
something neutrally and (2) being for or against that same thing? Resolving
this contradiction helps clarify the purpose and function of systematic ideology.

The Socialist Party of Great Britain served as a foil for many students
of systematic ideology. It was from the SPGB that Harold Walsby, George Walford
and many other early students split, and the dialogue between the SPGB and students
of systematic ideology has gone on for decades. It is the editor's limited understanding
that the SPGB has split into two groups, each claiming the name 'Socialist Party
of Great Britain.' The first group listed here seems to be the one most of a
kind with the group George Walford and Harold Walsby wrote about, but both groups
are listed out of a desire for fairness. The reader will have to decide for
himself or herself which is the 'real' SPGB. Look through their literature -
can you explain why they call themselves socialist while George Walford called
them anarchist?

There is no e-mail list, Usenet group or other forum specifically devoted to
systematic ideology - and this is by design. What the theory needs most is critical
attention from outsiders. Here are some suggestions for where to do just that.
Some members of the World Socialist Movement Forum and the Libertarian Alliance
Forum knew George Walford for many years, and are ideal critics of his theories.
Please consider these forums as places to find comrades to help you discredit
the theory as well as places to help you understand the theory. The editors
of GWIEP.NET cannot always be found in every conversation in each of these forums;
please feel free to contact us if we are missing out
on an especially good dialogue here or elsewhere.
